Developing the Leader Within You 2.0: The Leadership Training That Changes Everything
Developing the Leader Within You 2.0: The Leadership Training That Changes Everything

If everything rises and falls on leadership, then the most important leadership training you will ever invest in is the one that develops you.
That is the foundation of Developing the Leader Within You 2.0 by John Maxwell.
I have taught this class. I have walked leaders through it. I have personally studied and applied it. And I can tell you this: this book is not just about leadership strategy. It is about leadership identity.
Whether you are building a business, leading a team, growing a brokerage, raising a family, or launching a nonprofit, this leadership development book will challenge you to look in the mirror before you try to lead anyone else.
Because leadership is influence. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Leadership Training That Starts From the Inside
In today's world, people search for leadership training hoping for techniques, scripts, systems, and shortcuts.
What Maxwell teaches is deeper.
True leadership development begins internally: character, priorities, attitude, discipline, and vision.
The coaching guide reinforces this session by session, starting with the definition of leadership as influence and helping participants evaluate where they currently stand in their leadership journey.
This is what makes this book powerful for leadership coaching and organizational growth. It creates awareness. And awareness changes behavior.

The 5 Levels of Leadership: A Framework for Real Influence
One of the most impactful sections of Developing the Leader Within You 2.0 is the 5 Levels of Leadership framework:
Level 1: Position - People follow because they have to.
Level 2: Permission - People follow because they want to.
Level 3: Production - People follow because you get results.
Level 4: People Development - People follow because you invest in them.
Level 5: Pinnacle - People follow because of who you are and what you represent.
Most leaders start at Position. But sustainable influence begins at Permission.
When I teach this in leadership training sessions, the breakthrough moment comes when leaders realize they cannot skip levels. Influence must be earned.
If you are serious about leadership development in Tulsa or anywhere, understanding this framework is foundational.
According to Harvard Business Review, the most effective leaders focus on developing people rather than just managing tasks. Maxwell's framework provides a clear roadmap for making that shift.
Character: The Foundation of Leadership
Maxwell reminds us that you cannot climb beyond the limits of your character.
The coaching sessions highlight four dimensions of character:
Authenticity - Being transparent about your failures and strengths.
Self management - Disciplining your private decisions.
Humility - Remaining teachable regardless of your success.
Courage - Doing the right thing when it costs you.
This is where leadership training gets personal.
Are you transparent about your failures? Are you disciplined in your private decisions? Are you teachable? Are you courageous enough to do the right thing when it costs you?
At Legacy, this is where everything begins. Stewardship is our word of the year. But stewardship without character becomes manipulation fast.
Leadership training has to address the inside before the outside.
Priorities, Self Discipline, and Growth
One of my favorite reminders from this book is this:
You do not manage time. You manage priorities.
If your calendar does not reflect your values, your leadership will eventually drift.
Maxwell challenges leaders to focus on what gives the greatest return, then eliminate what distracts from their highest priorities.
Then he moves into self discipline, where he makes it clear that everything worthwhile is uphill.
Leadership growth is not accidental. It is intentional. It requires consistent daily action even when you do not feel like it.
In leadership coaching, this is where transformation happens: when leaders close the gap between knowing and doing.

Servant Leadership, Vision, and the Why Behind 2.0
The original Developing the Leader Within You was published in 1993, introducing foundational leadership principles like influence and the 5 Levels of Leadership.
Twenty five years later, in 2018, John Maxwell released Developing the Leader Within You 2.0 to reflect how leadership and culture had evolved, and how his own thinking had grown.
The updated version expands the 5 Levels, places stronger emphasis on servant leadership and vision, introduces clearer personal growth systems, and modernizes examples for today's leaders.
In many ways, the 2.0 edition models the very principle it teaches: leaders must continue growing if they expect their influence to expand. And the heart of leadership is serving people.
In a culture that often equates leadership with power, this chapter reframes leadership as responsibility.
Serving others is not weakness. It is strength under control. It is influence multiplied.
Then comes vision.
If the leader does not see the vision, the people never will.
Vision must be owned internally before it can be communicated externally. Leaders must feel it before others will follow it.
This aligns deeply with our Legacy mission. We are not building transactions. We are building leaders. We are building legacies.
And legacy requires vision, plus the desire to continue to grow.
I wrote guides and training material five years ago when I launched Legacy. Now, only five short years later, that material looks very different. Why? Because daily I am learning and growing.
That's the whole point of 2.0.
Why This Book Aligns With Legacy Leadership Training
At Legacy, whether through Legacy Realty Advisors or leadership coaching initiatives, the goal is not short term success. It is long term significance.
Developing the Leader Within You 2.0 reinforces:
Influence over title. Character over charisma. Growth over comfort. Service over status. Vision over convenience.
This is leadership training that creates impact beyond income.
And that is what legacy is about: becoming the 2.0 version of yourself.
According to Forbes, organizations that invest in leadership development see 25% higher profit margins and 21% higher productivity. But the real transformation happens when leaders commit to personal growth first.
