Tulsa's Hidden Book Lover's Paradise
A Small Business Spotlight — Gardner's Used Books, Tulsa, OK
We went in for one vinyl album and Leon did not want to leave. That is the magic of Gardner's Used Books, and once you walk through those doors, you will completely understand why.
Gardner's Used Books on South Mingo Road in Tulsa is not just a bookstore. It is a 23,000-square-foot treasure hunt that has been delighting Tulsans since 1991, and it is one of the most underrated destinations in Midtown Tulsa and beyond.
A Dream That Started With Boxes on the Floor
Richard Gardner started selling used books out of boxes on the floor in 1991. No shelves. No storefront. Just a love of books and a belief that Tulsa deserved a place like this. Nearly three decades later, that dream has grown into Oklahoma's largest used bookstore, a Tulsa institution known both locally and nationally.
That origin story matters. This is not a chain. This is not a franchise. This is one person's passion project that became a community landmark, and every time you shop here, you are part of that story.
23,000 Square Feet of Pure Discovery
Here is what Gardner's carries: books in every genre imaginable, audiobooks, comic books, vinyl records, DVDs, video games, and collectibles. Whatever you came in for, you will find it. And you will find fifteen other things you did not know you needed.
Leon discovered the comic section and that was it, game over. He moved through those aisles like he had found buried treasure, which honestly he had. Watching a kid that age fall in love with a physical space full of physical things is something you just do not see enough of anymore.
And yes, we found the vinyl album we came for. Eventually.
Perfect for Families, Especially Kids
Gardner's is exceptionally family-friendly. Children's books are buy-one-get-one, and there are bins of 25-cent books that make it completely affordable to let your kids go wild. Award reading lists are posted throughout the store to help young readers discover great titles. This is a place that actively encourages kids to read, and makes it fun.
If you are a grandparent, a parent, or anyone looking for a meaningful outing with kids this summer, put Gardner's at the top of your list. Leon has already asked to go back twice.
Buy, Sell, and Trade
One of the best things about Gardner's is their buy, sell, and trade model. Bring in your old books, records, games, or DVDs and walk out with trade credit toward something new. It is sustainable, it is affordable, and it is the kind of circular economy that keeps dollars inside the Tulsa community.
Add This to Your Summer Fun Bucket List
Gardner's Used Books is everything this spotlight series celebrates, a local business built from nothing, rooted in the Tulsa community, and offering something no big box store ever could. Twenty-three thousand square feet of wonder, history, music, and stories waiting to be discovered.
