What Building a Brokerage Taught Me: 50 Lessons from Legacy Realty Advisors

brokerage anniversary of Jennifer Mount shows power in purpose of leading and building a brokerage.

Five years ago, Legacy Realty Advisors wasn’t just a business idea it was a lifeline.

The vision came from Jason, who believed I could rebuild my life through not just my career, but a calling. He saw a way to grow his own Legacy brand while helping me get my life back on track and use what I’d learned to pour into others. The heart of it was simple but powerful: to create a place where realtors could design a life they didn’t need a vacation from where mentorship, purpose, and production could live side by side.

From there, Kasey and I got to work. Every Wednesday, without fail, we met to plan, pray, and prepare. We built everything from scratch….curriculum, systems, culture. We studied. We got coaching. We refined what it meant to build not just transactions, but people.

And on November 9th, we launched Legacy Realty Advisors.

Reaching the Five-Year Milestone of Building a Brokerage

Only about half of all new businesses in America make it to their fifth year. That number holds true across industries, from restaurants to real estate firms. So, reaching this milestone isn’t just a marker of time it’s proof of endurance.

We launched during unpredictable seasons. Rates shifted. Inventory vanished. Markets corrected. There were months when optimism had to carry what numbers couldn’t. But growth isn’t always loud, it’s often quiet, steady, and built through consistency long before it’s seen on paper.

This fifth year feels like standing at the top of a hill, looking back at every climb that almost made me even more resilient and realizing the view was worth it.

Lessons from Building a Real Estate Brokerage

Clarity beats motivation.

When you know your “why,” you don’t need constant pep talks. You need a plan.

The right people don’t need convincing.

When your values are visible, you attract those who share them and release those who don’t

Growth looks like pruning.

Some seasons required letting go…of habits, relationships, even opportunities that didn’t align. Every cut made room for healthier roots.

Stress is expensive.

If it’s draining your clarity, it’s costing you more than you realize. Delegation isn’t weakness; it’s wisdom.

Gratitude is fuel.

The minute I stop being grateful, I stop being effective. Perspective changes everything.

Advice for New Brokerage Owners and Entrepreneurs

Building a brokerage, while being in production, means carrying every hat at once. Visionary, recruiter, accountant, counselor, and sometimes janitor. It also means sitting in the tension between faith and fear.

There were nights I questioned everything. Times when agents left. Deals fell apart. Systems broke mid-launch. I learned that leadership isn’t about avoiding the mess, it's about walking through it with grace and direction.

And through it all, I discovered that success doesn’t look like arriving. It looks like adapting.

The Team Behind the Brokerage

Legacy Realty Advisors wouldn’t exist without the people who chose to link arms and grow together. Every closing, every meeting, every Tuesday team meeting…all of it matters.

Our team has evolved, but the heartbeat stays the same: we show up for each other. We believe in building something that lasts beyond our own names.

I’ve learned that the right people don’t need to be pushed; they just need to be trusted. And once trust is there, vision follows naturally. We laugh, serve, learn, grow, thrive, eat and even a lot of the time workout together!

Starting a Real Estate Brokerage with Purpose

Five years in, I can say this: we’re just getting started.

The next chapter is about depth, not volume…refining systems, mentoring new leaders, and amplifying the legacy of others. It’s about making sure that when people think of Legacy Realty Advisors, they think of excellence, integrity, and heart.

We’ve weathered the storms and built something that stands. Now, it’s time to build something that lasts.

Why Leadership, Not Luck, Builds Longevity

If you’re in your first year of building something, whether it’s a business, a dream, or a new version of yourself….keep going. You’ll face moments that make you wonder if it’s worth it. But if your “why” is anchored in service, it always will be.

When your “why” is rooted in service, your results will always follow. Don’t chase perfect, chase purpose. Because building a brokerage that lasts isn’t about timing or talent. It’s about leadership, integrity, and the consistency to keep showing up when others stop.

And don’t let the numbers fool you, surviving five years isn’t luck. It’s leadership.
