Why Presence Is the Greatest Gift We Give

work life balance

Last year, Leon went to Disney World.

He rode rides, watched the parades, met the characters, and had what I assumed would become one of his biggest childhood memories. A few months later I asked him what his favorite part was. He shrugged and he could not remember.

He is three years old, of course he could not remember. What mattered was not the destination or the money spent or the miles traveled. What mattered was that he was there with his mom and they were together. That answer stayed with me longer than I expected.

The Summer That Taught Me Something Simple

This summer Leon and I spent a lot of time together. We went to the library. We worked on puzzles. We took walks and chased butterflies. I put together a $52 swimming pool in the backyard with a little picnic table, and some of our best afternoons were spent splashing around and eating lunch outside.

None of it was expensive. None of it required planning. And those are the moments I find myself smiling about when I think back on this summer.

Somewhere between building businesses and answering emails and managing everything that comes with a full life, I think most of us forget something that children understand naturally. Presence matters. Attention matters. Connection is not something that happens automatically around a busy schedule. It happens when you decide to make it happen.

Leon did not care about Disney. He cared that someone showed up.

What This Has to Do With Real Estate and Business

When I was new in this career, I operated from fear more than I realized. Every phone call felt urgent. Every missed lead felt like a loss. If someone did not reach me immediately I worried another agent would get there first.

I even had a Cricket phone because I could not afford the minutes on AT&T.

After 25 years I understand something I could not have told you then. The strongest businesses are not built by chasing every lead.

They are built by nurturing relationships with the people who already know you, trust you, and believe in what you do. The best clients are not the ones who hire the first agent who answers. They are the ones who have been watching you show up consistently over time and eventually decide there is no one else they would call.

That does not mean being unreliable. Returning calls matters. Following through matters. Consistency is what builds trust and trust is what builds everything else. But there is a meaningful difference between being dependable and operating from anxiety, and it took me a long time to feel that difference clearly.

As School Starts Back Up

A new school year brings full calendars and tighter days almost overnight. Before the rhythm fully shifts, I want to leave a few thoughts with the parents, grandparents, and busy professionals who are reading this.

One consistent tradition is worth more than ten elaborate outings. Saturday morning pancakes. A weekly library trip. A standing evening walk. Children thrive on the predictability of something they can count on, and years from now they will remember the tradition long after they have forgotten what it involved.

Fifteen focused minutes can matter more than hours spent in the same room while distracted. Put the phone down. Ask a question and actually listen to the answer. Read something together. Children notice when they have your full attention and they notice when they do not.

For the REALTORs and entrepreneurs reading this, the same principle applies to your business. Focus your energy on the people who already know and trust you. Return your calls. Keep your promises. Schedule your income-producing work around your family when you can and protect the time that matters most like the appointment it is.

Your clients will not remember every transaction you closed. Your kids will not remember every deal you worked. What they will remember is whether you were there.

What I Will Actually Remember About This Summer

It will not be anything elaborate. It will be puzzles on the living room floor. Trips to the library where Leon picked books about trucks and dinosaurs with equal enthusiasm. A little backyard swimming pool and a picnic table and a three-year-old who had no idea he was teaching me something.

He reminded me that the moments worth having are usually smaller and simpler than we think they need to be. And that showing up, just being present and paying attention, is almost always enough.

That is the only thing I want to take into this next season. I hope it is useful to you too.

3-2-1 Takeaway

3 Things to Remember

  • Children remember how things felt, not what they cost. The moments that matter most are almost always the simplest ones.

  • The strongest real estate businesses are built through consistent relationship-nurturing, not lead-chasing. Dependability builds trust and trust builds everything else.

  • Presence is a choice. Connection does not happen automatically around a busy schedule. It happens when you decide to make it happen.

2 Questions Worth Asking

  • Is there one weekly tradition I could protect this school year that would mean something to the people I love?

  • Am I building my business from a place of genuine relationship or from a place of anxiety about missing the next opportunity?

1 Thing to Do Next

Choose one thing you will protect this fall, one tradition, one evening, one ritual, and put it on your calendar today. Treat it like your most important appointment because it probably is.
